Managing a team is like managing a pack. While it is not kosher to describe human beings as animals, we must understand that how people select leaders is similar to how animals select leaders or, more precisely, how wolves select Alphas. According to the United States Space Force (USSF) - Buckley Space Force Base, “Wolves determine a leader of the pack by selecting a wolf they deem the strongest and wisest. The chosen wolf still has to prove to the pack that he/she can lead, and must work to gain the trust of the pack to be deemed the alpha.” The minor case in point here is that even in the animal kingdom, though in leadership positions, the Alpha still has to prove to the pack that they are capable of leading.

Cultivating confidence in your ability to lead and manage, has much to do with cultivating character and very little to do with displaying your knowledge and skills. While it would be advantageous to let your team know in no uncertain terms that you have the most knowledge and experience, it carries very little weight with a team that has just as much experience or perhaps, in many cases, even more experience and knowledge.
