Spreading Holiday Cheer: Five Ways to Recognize, Reward, and Motivate Employees this Christmas
Updated: Sep 25, 2025
The Christmas season is a time for joy, family, and giving. For companies it is a time to build employee relationships and trust, to develop team and camaraderie feelings that undoubtedly filter into employee well-being and satisfaction. It is also a crucial time to show your employees how much you appreciate their hard work and dedication throughout the year. By implementing thoughtful recognition and reward programs and motivation strategies, you can boost morale, improve productivity, and foster a positive work environment that carries over into the new year.

1. The Power of Personalization:
Move beyond generic "Happy Holidays" messages and take the time to personalize your recognition efforts. Employees are often looking to see if their personal hardwork and efforts are recognised by their managers and supervisors. They want to be known and recognised. Imagine if you are walking into a Christmas party and an executive stops you and congratulates you on developing a strategy that saved the company millions of dollars or exceeded a sales target, or had gone above and beyond during a company crisis period. These moments make employees feel seen and recognised and ultimately motivate them to invest further in their relationship with the company. Of course, a handwritten note highlighting a specific achievement or simply expressing gratitude can also have a significant impact, especially in comparison to a mass email. Consider creating a "Wall of Fame" where employees' contributions are celebrated, or implement a peer-to-peer recognition program to encourage team spirit.
2. Festive Fun and Connection:
The holidays are a natural time for team building and creating lasting memories. Organize a virtual or in-person holiday party with festive activities, games, and delicious food. Studies show that competitive games among employees increase team cohesion, enhance communication, boost morale and employee engagement, improve leadership skills and ultimately improve productivity. Additionally, including employees' families in festivities helps foster a sense of community. This helps build an inclusive, family-friendly environment and a healthy work-life balance, incorporating the personal, social and professional lives of employees. The benefits of this perspective on employees cannot be underestimated, companies gain a well-rounded perspective on employees by seeing them communicate in different scenes. Companies could even host a Secret Santa gift exchange or a friendly gingerbread house decorating competition.
3. Rewards that Resonate:
While traditional bonuses and gifts are always appreciated, consider offering rewards that cater to individual preferences and interests. Building on making employees feel seen and recognised, companies can reflect this same theory on rewards. Through careful monitoring of employee performance and developing meaningful relationships with employees, companies can develop reward systems that resonate with employees. These could include gift cards to local businesses, tickets to holiday events, or experiences like a cooking class or spa day, which can be more meaningful than generic options. Companies could also implement a points system where employees earn rewards for exceeding goals or demonstrating desired behaviours.

4. Prioritizing Wellbeing:
The holiday season can be stressful for many but beyond the holiday season work throughout the year can be stressful for all employees. According to a PEW Study, only 48% of Americans from the United States of America take all their vacation. Many say that they are afraid to fall behind at work, they do not need it or feel bad for co-workers who have to carry their workload. Show your employees you care about their well-being by offering flexible work arrangements, additional paid time off, or access to Employee Assistance Program resources such as "employee education, individual assessments, organizational assessments, management consultation, referrals to treatment, and short-term counselling" (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 2023). Consider hosting a mindfulness session or inviting a guest speaker to share tips for managing holiday stress and highlighting what assistance and policies the company has implemented to improve employee well-being.
5. Investing in the Future:
Show your commitment to your employees' long-term growth by offering development opportunities in the new year. According to the American Psychological Association (APA) 2023 workforce survey, 91% of respondents say it is somewhat or very important to have a job where they consistently have opportunities to learn and 47% of respondents say they are offered educational opportunities. A 2018 Gartner study also found that majority of employees leave companies due to insufficient career growth opportunities. Therefore, investment in employees' educational pursuits increases employee satisfaction and reduces company turnover. This could include access to online courses, mentorship programs, or tuition reimbursement for relevant certifications. Investing in your employees' future demonstrates your confidence in them and motivates them to continue contributing to the company's success.
By implementing these five strategies, companies can go beyond simply recognizing their employees during the holiday season. You can create a culture of appreciation, reward, and motivation that will benefit your company throughout the year. Remember, a little effort can go a long way in making your employees feel valued and excited about the future. So, spread the holiday cheer and watch your team thrive!
